Hi, I'm Daphne! - July 15, 2010
We give our cars names. There. I admit it. We name our cars like they are pets! Ethan's truck is Clyde (in reference to his Clydesdale like strength). My classic mustang is Macuzick. Mac for short. The Suburban has been dubbed Big Red for the obvious reason of its bigness and redness. And then there's our Honda Fit.
Her name is Daphne. When we first got her, I was immediately reminded of a scene from "Some Like It Hot." Two men (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon) are boarding a train dressed as women in order to escape some mobsters. They are agreeing on the names they will use, Josephine and Geraldine - the feminine equavalent of their current names. Once on the train they introduce themselves, but instead of saying Geraldine, Jack Lemmon's character says, "Hi, I'm Daphne!" And when I met this car, that's exactly what she said to me.
The boys love Daphne. They never can just "get in and buckle your seatbelts" like mom directs. No, they have to climb in and play with all her knobs and buttons until mom loses her temper. Then they scramble into the back seat.
I can't really blame them. After all, she is a fun little car. I have a blast zipping around the city with her. And I'm sure my boys will someday enjoy that too.
When they pry the keys from my cold, dead hand.
