Anatomy of Eating a Birthday Cake

Young Asher,

I'll admit it.  I'm pretty strict when it comes to giving you sweets.  You don't get many cookies, and you almost never get cake.  But as it was your 1st birthday, cake was definitely on the menu.  In fact, I made you my most decedant chocolate cake.

We always begin with the birthday candle(s).  In this case, it was a bit too windy for us to keep the candle lit, so we just pretended you blew it out.

Then comes the careful dissection of the cake.
Note: utensils - while sometimes useful - are not necessary for this process.
Then we carefully sample the cake, rolling it around on the tongue to make sure we get all the subtle textures and nuances of the flavor.
When we are sure the cake is of adequate quality, we share with our friends.
Once we have enjoyed this delightful repast, it is time to cleanse the palate and wash up.

Happy birthday, dear one.  And may you have many more to follow.

Love Much,
Mom
